High Wither Saddle Pad

In general, saddle pads are designed to help keep the saddle stable and in place. They can also protect the horse’s back, allowing him to move freely without pain or irritation. But there are many different types of saddle pads on the market, and some of them can be more beneficial to certain horses than others. The type of saddle pad you need depends on the horse’s build and unique needs, as well as your riding or performance goals.

The best high wither saddle pad is one that will contour to your horse’s shape, ensuring a perfect fit and eliminating movement under the saddle. The pad should be thick enough to allow the horse’s back muscles to work properly, but not so thick that it pushes into the shoulders or restricts freedom of movement. This pad is made of 100% pure felt, which heats up to contour to your horse’s build, giving you a custom fit that will reduce saddle movement and discomfort while you ride.

During a walk, the force on the horse’s back is fairly consistent and is roughly equal to the rider’s weight. However, during the suspension phases of trot and canter, the forces on the horse’s back are twice as great. A saddle that isn’t fitted properly or has a large amount of pressure over the withers will result in excessive soreness and discomfort for the horse.

If your horse has high withers or a sway back, the best saddle for him is a high wither relief pad that lifts the saddle off this ridge between the shoulder blades. These pads will also offer support in the corners of the back to help improve saddle stability, reducing the risk of rubs and soreness for the horse.

Another great option for high withers is a contoured topline pad. The open wither design of this pad lifts the saddle away from the withers, preventing direct contact and preventing soreness and irritation. This pad is breathable, has a mesh spine and covered girth patch for protection of the girth area. It can be used with GP, jumping or dressage saddles and fits most horses well.

This pad features a breathable mesh spine to help keep the saddle cooler and wicks sweat away quickly to prevent it from accumulating on the back of your horse. It is also designed to prevent dry spots by covering the girth patch with a layer of shock-absorbing material. It attaches with hook-and-loop fasteners to the Dee ring, which is traditionally where the first billet loops around.

The saddle girth attachments are short, but secure when fastened and the mesh provides good clearance for shoulder movement. This pad stayed in place, didn’t slip, and didn’t leave marks or feel uncomfortable on my test horses, even after long rides. It also washes nicely and retains its shape and structure after repeated washes. This is a good option for riders who want a breathable, wicking high wither saddle pad that doesn’t cost too much.
